In 2013 Myrddin Special Needs and Autistic Unit embarked on a venture to develop an Assistive Technology Centre. The Journey began when we entered the TES ‘Win A Classroom’ competition.

We were overwhelmed by the support we had from the local community and beyond in helping us to win this fantastic prize.

Please enjoy the following video, which we submitted as part of our successful application to make our dream a reality.

Our Assistive Technology and Communication centre is used by all pupils. However, individuals with specific communication needs have planned personalised sessions focusing on their communication targets from teacher assessments. A Communication Support Assistant has been trained in the ACE Centre at Oldham and at Tŷ Gwyn Special School, Cardiff to facilitate this. Communication strategies such as PECS, core boards, objects of reference, switch skills, eye gaze and speech work are developed here, for use across the school and in general life skills at home. Multisensory sessions also take place here, with use of the magic carpet and projection wall in sensology and TACPAC. Pupils enjoy 1:1 activities in Canolfan Gwili, to further their communication skills. Input from other professionals helps-such as eye gaze technician, OT’s for positioning, and SALT targets.
